Understanding the metrics

What these numbers mean and how to improve them.

Score (0–100)

Overall

Clarity score: the higher it is, the smoother the reading.

  • Goal: 70+ for an easy text.
  • Improve by shortening sentences and adding whitespace.

Words

Volume

Number of words detected. Used as a baseline for averages and densities.

  • A short text can be clear even with few paragraphs.
  • From ~120 words, spacing out becomes important.

Sentences

Structure

Number of sentences. Few sentences for many words = long sentences.

  • Aim for one main idea per sentence.
  • Split at “and”, “but”, “because”, “so” if it drags on.

Paragraphs

Airiness

A text without paragraphs is tiring. Add whitespace every 3–6 sentences.

  • 1 paragraph = 1 idea.
  • Add line breaks on mobile.

Average sentence length

Rhythm

Ideally 12–20 words. Beyond that, the reader gets lost more easily.

  • Above 25 words, think “split”.
  • Replace subordinate clauses with 2 sentences.

Average word length

Vocabulary

The longer the words, the more technical or abstract the vocabulary tends to be.

  • Prefer common words when possible.
  • Define technical terms if needed.
