Absolute and canonical URLs

List only the URLs you want to see in the results, with the final protocol and host.

lastmod must be accurate

Indicate the last significant modification of the page, not the date of sitemap generation.

Recommended Method

List only the absolute and canonical URLs you want to propose for indexing. Exclude redirects, errors, duplicates, noindex pages, and unnecessary parameter variations.

Add lastmod only if its value reflects a significant change to the page. An artificially refreshed date at each generation reduces trust in this signal.

Publish the file at a stable address, reference it in robots.txt or submit it in the engine console, then monitor discovered and indexed URLs.

Limits to Know

A sitemap or index contains a maximum of 50,000 entries and weighs a maximum of 50 MiB before compression. Use multiple files beyond that.
The file's location usually determines its scope. A sitemap placed in a subdirectory should not list URLs located higher up without a verified inter-site submission mechanism.
Google ignores the priority and changefreq values. The file is a discovery index, not a guarantee of crawling, indexing, or ranking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should all pages of the site be included?

No. Include canonical, indexable, and useful versions. A clean sitemap helps more with diagnostics than an inventory containing technical or duplicate URLs.

What is the difference between a sitemap and a sitemap index?

A sitemap lists pages in url elements. An index lists sitemap files in sitemap elements and allows distributing a large set.

Are my URLs sent to Tools Central?

No. Generation, analysis, and download are done locally in the browser. The tool does not visit the entered URLs.

A Minimal File is Often Better

Start with loc and a reliable lastmod. Do not add optional tags to fill the file: each value should have operational significance.
